Morrisby Report - key stages

Now you have done all the paperwork and you have your report, you may find it useful to see how we used all the information you provided.

Stage 1- The Morrisby Profile

An Overview
The Profile results give you a picture of your strengths and abilities. You will see from your report that we measure:

  • six different abilities
  • four important aspects of your personality
  • how quickly and accurately you work with your hands.

Interpretation
For interpretation purposes, various tests are grouped together. To understand "how you tick", we group certain of your test scores together and compare them with one another. Sometimes we also compare one group of your tests scores with another group of scores.  For example to find out how practically orientated you are, your reasoning ability score and your three general abilities scores are compared against your two practical ability scores.

Direction
One of the most important things we look to identify from your test scores is the type of ability you have. So if your perceptual ability is your strongest ability it indicates that you have potential in scientific and engineering areas. In contrast a strong verbal ability is associated with success in many administrative, managerial and people orientated occupations.

Personality
As far as personality is concerned, we take a look at your work temperament and how you apply your abilities. To do this we glean information from four of the very simple tests that you did. Your results show how flexible and aware you are, as well as how much you believe in yourself and how outwardly confident you are.

Norms
To discover how your abilities relate to other peoples', your tests scores are scaled and then compared with the scaled tests scores from other adults. This is called norming.

Your Talents
There are some things such as musical, sporting, and acting and artistic abilities, which cannot be measured by the tests. If you have any of these special skills you need to discuss them with your advisor.

Stage 2 - The Questionnaire

Your career interests and preferences were measured by your responses to the interest questionnaire you completed before the test session.

In your report you will see that your career interests are grouped into the three main categories-PeopleInformation (facts figures etc) and Things (machines, tools, nature and real objects). Your work preferences are also divided into 3 main categories -those relating to human surroundings (Who), those relating to work style (How) and those relating to physical surroundings (Where).

Two pie charts in your report show your level of interest in these categories. On the subsequent pages in the report each category is broken down to show your degree of interest in each category. Your interests are shown in bar-chart form with descriptive text beside each chart.

The World of Work
This chart, on Page 14 of your report, shows graphically your level of interest in the major career families. A high level of interest is represented by a thicker line; less interest by a thinner line. You must bear in mind when looking at the chart that it does not take into account your Morrisby Profile results. In other words, it measures your interests in a particular career area but not whether you would be suited to it.

Stage 3 - Your Guidance Report

You will see that your report is very comprehensive and contains 14 parts:

  1. Introduction
  2. An outline of your test results
  3. Your reasoning ability
  4. Your general abilities
  5. Your practical abilities
  6. Your planning style
  7. How you work with your hands
  8. Your problem-solving method
  9. Your learning style
  10. Your personality
  11. A comparison of your abilities and personality
  12. The world of work
  13. The next step
  14. Career suggestions

In each section before detailing your own results, there is a general explanation about what the section is assessing.

Adults
If you have left full time education you will also have received "the way ahead" workbook. This has a work work values inventory and some self-report exercises to for you to complete.

Stage 4 - Career Suggestions

As the title suggests these are only suggestions! They have been chosen from details of  over 470 occupations held on our database. The 12 occupations in your report have been selected because they best match your abilities, interests and likely qualifications.

Each title has 3 associated areas along side it. These are intended to give you some more ideas. If a particular career does not appear in the report it does not mean it is necessarily unsuitable - discuss it at your interview! Any further careers suggestions can be considered in the light of your report.

Stage 5 - Feedback

Your report contains very valuable information but to get the most out of it you need to discuss the contents with your adviser. During this session your adviser will not only discuss and explain the contents of your report, but also focus on the careers that match your talents and interests. Advisers can also give you very useful information on each of the careers areas suggested.
