Useful site giving information on wages/salaries, prospects, turnover of people leaving the career. The site also lists occupations that are currently facing skill shortages so prospects are good. Links are made to local training providers.

Job Outlook is a quarterly journal from the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations that provides forward-looking information for around 400 occupations. This covers the number of opportunities and vacancies, predicted growth in openings and broad earnings projections. Contains web references to sites that give further detail for careers rated as having ‘Good Prospects’. Can be downloaded from the website.

The commonwealth on-line job information resource. This initially looks like a site for students but persevere, register and get a login as the content is appropriate to adults. Acts as a portal with links to relevant information. Provides career profiles and allows a personal profile to be built. The site includes a series of simple questionnaires intended to clarify interests/ preferred working conditions / aspirations and other aspects relevant to career choice.

The Job Guide is an annually updated and State specific publication containing around 500 careers. Describes the tasks involved a job, personal requirements, education and training, employment opportunities, contact details of professional bodies and where tertiary education courses are held in the State. May be purchased in hardcopy, on CD, or used for free on the web with the link above.

Career Anchors, Edgar H. Schein, Ph.D. 

An American workbook booklet that looks in detail at work values. (concise, interaction based and under $30) If the Values Inventory in the Morrisby workbook was of interest/benefit to you, Career Anchors focuses more deeply on this area. It includes a Career Orientations Inventory with scoring key, and leads to the identification of one career anchor (out of 8) that you would not give up when changing career.

Designed to be used with a friend/partner/adviser who interviews you about your work history to make you think and clarify your needs. Some Career Advisers may use this as a central part of their work.
